Poker Hands - Details and Descriptions

In poker, it is the objective of every player to construct the best hand, or the best combination of five cards. The hands are based on standard ranking system, and everyone who wants to learn to play poker has to memorize them, as it’s the most essential part of a game, together with a good bluffing skills. The participant with highest ranked hand wins. It’s an entertaining game that many people like to play these days.

A standard deck of 52 cards is used in poker, with the addition of joker in some variants. This deck of cards is composed of four different types of suits, and each suit is comprised of 13 cards in sequence. A poker hand consists of five cards. Individual cards include Ace being the highest, followed by the Queen, the Jack, and 2 being the lowest.

The Straight flush is a category that comprises of five cards of the same suit, which are also in sequence. It is called straight flush for the aforementioned encounters the prerequisite of both a straight and a flush. The highest possible hand is the royal flush, which includes five cards of one suit from 10 to Ace. In case two players construct the same category, the hands are judged based on the individual rank of the cards.

Four of a kind is another hand category that includes 4 same-ranked cards and another one. Higher ranked quads defeat lower ranked ones. A full house is a poker hand that contains 3 cards of the same rank and another matching pair of another rank. In judging two full houses, ranking is placed on the three matching cards. Flush is another poker hand that consists of five same suites cards, in no particular order. The card of the highest rank is the basis of judgment in case of two flushes. Straight hand, as the name implies, is a set of cards in proper sequence or order, regardless of the suit. Again, in judging two straight hands, the highest rank determines the champion.

Three of a kind is a poker hand that features three cards with similar rank and another two unmatched cards. These two cards must not be the same in rank as the three matching cards.

Two pair is a category that includes two same ranked pairs of cards and another one of any rank but not the same as the pair. Higher ranking pair determines the winner in case of two two-pair hands. If there is two-pair, there is also one-pair. This hand contains only one pair and another three cards that must also be different from each other and the matching cards. If there is hand that does not meet any of the stated hand categories, it is now called a high card. In essence, no hand is constructed in high hand. The essential card in this hand is the highest ranked card as it determines the winner.
